On this page, we have created a detailed overview of CBSE, its association with NCERT, grading structure followed and grade wise syllabus for each subjects

 What is CBSE?

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) is a national level board of education under the Union Government of India. It was founded in 1929 and is now governed by the Ministry of Education. CBSE has both public and private schools of India affiliated under it and it ensures a common curriculum and academic structure throughout all the schools.

As of 2025, more than 27,000 schools in India are affiliated with CBSE, making it one of the largest education boards in the world. It offers education from pre primary to Class 12 and conducts two major national examinations:

  • All India Secondary School Examination (AISSE) - Class 10

  • All India Senior School Certificate Examination (AISSCE) - Class 12

CBSE and NCERT - How are they connected?

CBSE works in collaboration with NCERT (National Council of Educational Research and Training), which is the academic wing of the Ministry of Education. NCERT is responsible for designing textbooks, curriculum frameworks, teacher training, and educational research. Whereas, CBSE conducts the examination and oversees the school body.

Here is how CBSE and NCERT are interlinked:

  • NCERT develops the syllabus and textbooks for CBSE-affiliated schools.

  • CBSE recommends the use of NCERT books in schools mostly for the core subjects like Mathematics, Science, English, Hindi, and Social Science.

  • CBSE conducts the board examinations and prepares questions which are based on the NCERT curriculum.

This ensures a uniform and structured curriculum along all the schools affiliated with CBSE.

  • Practical subjects include lab assessments and project work

  • NCERT books remain the core learning material for all subjects
